August 2014 – Preparations are underway in Namibia for the launch of Namibia’s sharpened child survival strategy, under the banner of A Promise Renewed. Namibia’s launch will take place during the first week of September, and will include the launch of Namibia’s Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Country Implementation Plan.
Namibia’s updated strategy will set out ambitious new child survival targets:
- To reduce the under-five mortality rate from 39 in 2012 to 24 by 2015 and 21 by 2018;
- To reduce the infant mortality rate from 28 in 2012 to 10 by 2018;
- To reduce the neonatal mortality rate from 18 in 2012 to 10 by 2018;
- To reduce the maternal mortality ratio from 200 in 2010 to 150 by 2018 and 50 by 2035.
The launch will be led by the Namibian government, in close partnership with civil society and NGOs including Synergos, an NGO working on health systems and nutrition, as well as NAFIN, the Namibian Alliance For Improved Nutrition.
